INTERPRETATION LIBERIA
A nation on the west coast of Africa next to Sierra Leone. The climate is equatorial, forest of salt marsh Mangroves line the coast while inland are sparse forest and grasslands. It has a rainy season May-Oct and harsh harmattan winds the remainder of the year.
Harmattan winds are dry, dusty northerly trade winds which blow from the Sahara down into west Africa. It brings in dust storms, crop damage, and sometimes tornadoes. Limits visibility and blocks the sun and creates health problems. Respiratory illness, nosebleeds, skin & eyes problems.
They have several communicable diseases, tuberculosis, maternal death high, HIV, nearly 70% of women have had female genital mutilation. They were part of the Ebola virus outbreak of 2014 that spread form Guinea.Liberia was founded by the American Colonization Society in the 1800s, a group who thought free slaves had a better chance in Africa than the USA. It is the only African nation that has self-proclaimed independence without gaining it from revolt of war with other powers.
In modern times they have had political unrest & civil war that destroyed most of their hospitals. Rape & sexual violence against women is one of the highest in the world, with many of the victims adolescent girls. Polygamy is common.
They import most of their food, 90% of their rice and are vulnerable to food shortages- 21% of children are malnourished.
