INTERPRETATION MADAGASCAR
An island nation in the Indian Ocean off the southeast coast of Africa. It is comprised of one large island and several little ones, the fourth largest island in the world with over 24 million population. Its is a biodiveristy hotspot, 90% of its wildlife is found no where else in the world, made famous by Walt Disney animated movie.
It belongs to the group of least developed nations. Nearly 70% live on less than a dollar a day. Yet there are many resources. EcoTourism is a primary GPD. It is the principle supplier of vanilla (80%) , cloves and ylang-ylang (an essential aromatherapy oil) , and half of the worlds sapphires, the worlds largest titanium ore reserves, plus other minerals & oil & gas.
Vanilla grows on vine orchids that demand a certain set of environmental elements to grow,and it takes 3 years for them to start producing beans and are labor intensive because of hand pollination and harvesting.
Poor medical care, high maternal & infant deaths because of disease transmitted to babies-- snail (schistosomiasis), malaria, sexually transmitted diseases. HIV is relatively low compared to the mainland.
Religion- Traditional beliefs 45% (ancestral worship), Christianity 45% (Protestant 25/ Roman Catholic 20%), with much mixture of beliefs . 7% Islam.
