INTERPRETATION OF TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS
An archipelago of forty islands belonging to the British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean.about 650 miles southeast of Miami. They are known as TCI for short, and primarily a tourist and offshore financial center. They got their name from a cactus (turk) and word caya hico from ancient Caribbean meaning “string of islands”. Only eight of the islands are populated with a total of 50k.
Before 2002, being a British Overseas Territory, the people were not citizens of the islands nor of the UK, but did have standard citizens rights but were called “Belongers”, but since 2002, all British Overseas territories have British citizenship.
The islands are a biodivesity hotspot because of the salt-pan that was established when the Caribbean was formed. These salt pans were once known as “white gold” as the salt was valuable for trade.
