Also known as “The Most Serene Republic of San Marino”. It was established in 301 by a stonemason , Marinus, who founded a monastic community there to escape Christian persecution. Thus it is the oldest extant sovereign state as well as oldest constitutional republic.
They are one of the richest nations of the world with a high Gdp, no national debt, and a budget surplus- it is the only country with more automobiles than people.
Its motto is “Freedom”
Religion- no established state religion but taxpayers have the right to request .3% of their income tax go to the Catholic church or other charity. Roman Catholic- 97% with about half practicing
