INTERPRETATION OF UZBEKISTAN
A densely populated nation in Central Asia, it is only one of two doubly landlocked nations of the world-- it is surrounded by other landlocked nations and must to pass two borders to reach a coastline. One of its borders is with Afghanistan. It gained independence from Russia in 1991. It is a democratic, secular, unitary, constitutional republic. It promotes itself as a government protecting its peoples basic freedoms & rights.
But it is described by most watch-dog agencies as an ‘authoritarian state with limited civil rights with wide scale violations of virtually all basic human rights. According to reports the most violations are torture, arbitrary arrests, restrictions on freedom of religion, speech press, free association & assembly. Forced sterilization, mass murder of those who oppose the government. Uzbekistan has the second highest rate of modern slavery with 4% of the population, over a million as slaves.
They have one of the largest armed forces in Central Asia, but its equipment is not modern & its training is outdated.After 9/11 they allowed the US to build an airbase, but in 2005 they kicked the US out because of its reaction to the Andijan massacre where the government fired upon protesters killing from 200-2000.
Religion- 80% Islam with a majority being non-denominational Muslims, 5% Russian Orthodox, 16% other religion or non-religious.
